Some are relocating from Ontario. Some are leaving British Columbia. Others are simply looking for a different lifestyle, more space, or better value for their money.
No matter where they’re coming from, the questions are usually pretty similar.
“What’s Calgary really like?”
“What neighbourhood should I be looking at?”
“Is now a good time to buy?”
After helping buyers move here for years, I’ve learned that what makes Calgary special isn’t always what shows up on a listing sheet. Yes, we have access to the mountains. Yes, we have a strong economy and incredible outdoor opportunities. But what tends to surprise people most is how livable the city actually is.
Calgary has a way of feeling like a major city without some of the challenges that often come with major cities. It offers opportunity, space, and community, which is a big reason why so many people who move here end up staying.
Calgary is Really a Collection of Communities
One of the biggest mistakes I see buyers make is treating Calgary like one giant neighbourhood.
The reality is that Calgary is made up of dozens of unique communities, each with its own personality and lifestyle. Living in Bridgeland is completely different than living in Aspen Woods. Mission offers a very different experience from Mahogany. Even communities that are only a few kilometers apart can attract completely different buyers.
That’s why I always encourage people to think about how they want to live before they start thinking about specific houses.
Do you want to walk to restaurants and coffee shops on a Saturday morning? Are schools your top priority? Do you want quick access to downtown or would you rather be closer to the mountains?
These are often the questions that help narrow down the right community far more effectively than square footage or finishes.
I’ve always believed that you can renovate a kitchen, but it’s a lot harder to change your neighbourhood.
The Lifestyle Usually Becomes the Biggest Selling Feature
Many people start their home search focused on the property itself. That’s completely understandable.
But after they’ve lived here for six months, the conversations change.
Suddenly, it’s the pathway system they love. Or the fact that they can be hiking in Kananaskis on the weekend. Or how easy it is to get across the city compared to where they lived before.
One of my favourite things about Calgary is the balance it offers. You can build a career, raise a family, enjoy a great restaurant scene, spend time outdoors, and still have access to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country.
For many people, that’s what ultimately makes Calgary feel more like home.
Calgary Still Offers Value
As someone who spends a lot of time watching the market, I can tell you that Calgary has changed significantly over the last few years.
Prices have increased, and competition remains strong in many segments of the market. But compared to many major Canadian cities, Calgary still offers opportunities that are becoming increasingly difficult to find elsewhere.
I’ve worked with buyers relocating from Toronto and Vancouver who are generally surprised by the options available to them here. Whether they’re looking for a family home, a luxury property, or a condo close to downtown, Calgary continues to offer a compelling mix of lifestyle and value.
My Advice to Anyone Moving Here
Take your time getting to know the city.
Visit different communities. Spend an afternoon walking around the neighbourhoods you’re considering. Grab a coffee in Kensington. Explore Bridgeland. Drive through Mahogany. Visit the pathways along the Bow River.
The right home matters, but the right community matters just as much.
